P:ear is looking for some volunteers to help run three great fundraising events over the next few months. Check out p:ear's website (www.pearmentor.org) to find out a little more about the organization.

Thursdays Aug 7th and Sept 4th: Unico Properties and Widmer Bros are putting together a "Movies in the Park" movie series on first thursdays aug 7th and sept 4th in Jamison Square. We'll need alcohol servers and general help from approx 5-10pm. p:ear gets all the proceeds from the beer sales!

Wednesday Sept 3rd: p:ear re-opens in september! Wednesday sept 3rd is our first "wednesday pre-view party" for the new p:ear gallery! this will be a schmoozy 200 person standing event which will need alcohol and food pass-tray servers, as well as general help. 5-10pm

Sunday Oct 19th - Widmer Bros' "Run Like Hell" 1/2 marathon for p:ear! this is an early morning - noonish event event for which we'll need general support and alcohol servers.

There is a cancer patient named Aly whom I work with at Doernbecher that is going to be having a benefit show at the Astoria Event Center on July 13 at 4PM. They have already gone through the Sparrow program and are about $5000 short of the needed funds. She has already had two bands drop out of the show. I am looking for some musicians who might be willing to play at this show. There will also be a silent auction that people could donate art or other items to. Drummer Needed for Imaginary Airship

Imaginary Airship is currently seeking a drummer. We're a pretty down-tempo indie rock band, mellow at times but heavy at times, sort of spacey and experimental, but pretty. Influences are wide ranging but these are the main ones: Starflyer 59, Pedro the Lion, Beatles, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, etc. We'd like someone who has a good sense of dynamics, knowing when to be minimal and when to unleash. A solid, musical drummer with a good work ethic is more important to us than someone flashy. We are all believers, all drug free, all serious about working hard on our music and you should be too. If you have a knack for cutting holes and pounding nails into plywood, and aren't too shabby with a paintbrush, or know artsy folk that are willing to tackle this project with you, you should contact me!

Photographers Needed

As many of you know I am in the process of hiring a "big band", circus performers, photographers, face painters, dancers, and a balloon artist for our annual Vintage Carnival coming up August 2nd from 11am-3pm at Courtyard Senior Campus, 6125 SE Division St.

Last year, we had one employee stationed with a point-and-shoot camera at a "vintage photo booth" with a backdrop and props. This year, I'd like to get a little more creative and reach out to the photography community in Portland to see if there are any photographers willing to take more creative shots of the Carnival in exchange for the chance to expand their portfolios, a complimentary lunch, free Hopworks beer, and a good time with people in your 'hood. The carnival is a family-friendly event open to the public with all proceeds benefitting the local Alzheimers Association.

In addition to the advertising benefits this event brings to the company I work for, it also can serve as a springboard for developing relationships between the residents here and families and individuals at Imago Dei.

Kids's Music Event at the Artistery

Hi Friends,

Andy from Bark Hide and Horn here. My girlfriend Jessie and I recently started a kids' entertainment group called Jelly Jar Productions and are organizing an event that I thought you all might be interested in. It's a kid and family oriented show at the Artistery (a sweet all-ages live/work/performance space on SE Division, if you don't know it) on Saturday, July 12th in the daytime (maybe 3-6pm?). Our idea is to get a bunch of our musician and artist friends to perform original kids'
songs/puppet shows/plays/stories/etc.-- basically to expose working local artists to an exciting young audience, and to expose young audiences to exciting art and music. In my experience, performing for kids is humbling, invigorating, and incredibly rewarding, and I want to share that experience with others who might not interact with kids day to day.

What we're asking is if you'd be interested in putting together a set (anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes) of songs, stories, puppetry, or something else to perform at the show. We'll probably have an open-mic style section, with a bunch of folks performing a song (or story) or two, leading into two or three longer sets. Original content is awesome, but if you're more comfortable performing classic kids' songs, that's great too. Also, if you have a hidden talent like juggling, making balloon animals, face-painting, drawing caricatures, or cooking carnival food, we're hoping to have a bunch of booths set up for sideline entertainment.

We want to make this a true community event, so any talent or energy you are willing to offer would be amazing. If you have your own brilliant ideas for the event, please let me know, as it is just beginning to take shape and could be anything we make it. But time is of the essence! The event is only a month away, so if you can let me know ASAP if you're interested, we can set up a meeting to brainstorm ideas and get the ball rolling.

Equip PDX 2008

In September of 2008, the Portland International House of Prayer will launch its first internship program, called equippdx '08.

This year long journey is for those interested in exploring the areas of prayer, mission, justice and the arts. Together, we will consider how these areas fit into the broader idea of community transformation. We will also be concerned with how to live passionately for Jesus every day, incorporating each of the above areas into the rhythm of our lives. Participants will have the opportunity to work a part- or full-time job while living in community with 8-10 other men and women. Speakers will include leaders from the Portland area, as well as those from other parts of our nation and the world. Weekly prayer meetings will take place at the Portland International House of Prayer and outreach involvement to the poor and fatherless will be a requirement.

equippdx '08 will also involve a wider community surrounding LivingStonespdx, a ministry of the Portland International House of Prayer. Opportunities for friendships, mentor relationships and great times of learning together will be provided on a weekly basis!

equippdx is for you if…

• You desire to explore what it is to live a life of ministry but don't feel God's call for your life involves traditional full-time ministry. You have pursued a career path and a life direction. You would like to take a season to explore what it is to carry the life and death of Christ into your office, friendships, hobbies and free time, but don't have the ability to put your life and career on hold to do it.

• You have participated in internship or discipleship programs in the past but now feel the need to explore how to live your daily life out of that deep deposit of God you received in that season.

• You would like to understand what community transformation entails, and how it is connected to prayer, mission, justice and the arts. You have a deep burden to see God transform a specific community and want to understand the tools God gives every-day, career-established, relationally-minded people to do ordinary things with extraordinary effect.

equippdx is a one-year program set in a community household of 25 to 35 year-olds. The structured activities and study times focus on prayer, personal growth, relationships, community service, the creative arts and worship, and their part in community transformation. All program activities are scheduled around traditional 'office hours' to allow participants to continue in their career path and to work while in the program.

Book Buddies at Atkinson

Here's a great way to encourage some of the kids in our public schools system to get reading. It's a one time volunteer opportunity with a great local school.

A gal I know is a teacher at Atkinson (the elementary school near Franklin on Division) and at the end of the year they pair adult book buddies with 4th and 5th grade students. The student picks the book, both the student and the adult read the book, and then they spend an hour talking about it on May 9th at 1 pm. I did it last year and it was a lot of fun. Sounds like this year I'll get to work with the younger sister of the girl I had last year. I'm really looking forward to it.

The Freedom Day Rally, an awareness event on Human Trafficking issues, will be in Portland this year in July located in the North Park Blocks. Artists are needed to present artwork depicting slavery and human trafficking issues. This will be a large Portland event, with many nationally recognized speakers. You may sell your artwork at the event; however, it is requested that a percentage goes to any organization working in the field of human trafficking. As you are certainly aware, Wordstock is one of the Portland's most high-profile cultural events and the biggest celebration of books and literature in the Pacific Northwest. p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth, ages 15 to 23, through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives. Each year our programs serve more than 350 homeless and transitional young people.

To truly exit homelessness, kids must develop the internal strength, skills and foresight to make healthy choices. p:ear provides a safe, non-judgmental environment in which youth are trusted to outgrow unproductive and harmful behaviors. We offer individualized mentoring and education programs in a safe, reliable and intimate setting designed to foster trust, build self-esteem and to teach homeless and transitional kids – who all too often are regarded by society as disposable, "hopeless cases" – that they are valuable individuals with a future who have something vital to contribute to this community.

p:ear staff and volunteers serve as mentors, friends, and role models, while p:ear's unique programs create opportunities for young people to grow intellectually, express themselves constructively, communicate in positive ways and engage in meaningful interactions with the larger community of Portland. This is not work that can be accomplished in the short-term. These are relationships based on trust that take years to cultivate and require enormous dedication to sustain.

We are committed to being there for p:ear youth over the long-haul to share failures and successes, mundane events as well as life-altering milestones.

“A typical day volunteering at P:EAR keeps a volunteer busy and excited about the relationships being built with homeless and transitional youth.
In the course of an 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift, the young people are given two nutritious and much needed meals. At 8 a.m. breakfast is set out and coffee is made. 8:30 a.m. the doors open to maybe a dozen homeless and transitional youth. As the hour rolls on, more and more enter in and the room fills up. Myself or another volunteer will walk down the block to a bakery that is generously donating muffins and bread to P:EAR. Friendships between P:EAR and the community, both downtown and beyond, are always being fostered. Later, near lunch time, a volunteer or two will go out into the community again to pick up donated food, or begin preparing food kept in refrigerators on site. Volunteers are actively replenishing the food table as the meals and coffee are rapidly consumed. After the meal, what can be recycled or put into compost goes into appropriate bins.
Volunteers are kept busy setting out art materials amongst the several large tables and engaging the youth in relationship. The young people are encouraged to use time creatively. A wide eyed kid plays wildly on the piano; several others are doing crosswords, writing poetry, or play acoustic guitars decked in band stickers. Whether painting, printing, coloring, creating collage, or whatever else there is rarely a dull moment. All the young people are colorful and interesting; I always enjoy talking with them about their life up to where they are now, maybe while coloring designs or playing chess. I’m continually amazed by some of the talents this group possesses which are allowed to surface through the P:EAR program.

Other opportunities to get involved are plentiful. We often need to organize and upkeep the art materials. When not actively engaged with the youth, volunteers are putting away and organizing newly donated materials. At the beginning of each month, a volunteer may be involved in helping several of these homeless youth to put together an art show for an upcoming First Thursday downtown. Last month there was a trip out of the city for skiing. This week several of the youth were able to go to a play downtown, such a treat.
Creativity, working toward a cause that provides immense opportunity, and the community created between staff and the youth are just a few reasons I have enjoyed my volunteer time with P:EAR.”

p:ear needs volunteers to help with all sorts of different needs including:

Mentors: a once a week commitment to hanging out with young people, learning alongside them and being an ongoing positive influence in their lives.

Mailings: This is both a monthly commitment and a bi-annual event helping p:ear to address and mail their newsletters, fundraiser invitations and information about their monthly art shows.

Receptionist work: Once a year p:ear requires people who can call their sponsors and supporters to remind them about the annual p:ear blossoms fundraiser event.

p:ear blossoms:p:ear needs a number of volunteers to help in a variety of different roles at their annual fundraising event.

Chaperones:p:ear needs a call list of about 4-5 people who would be willing to go to concerts, plays, events in the community with youth on a "last minute" basis.

Donating supplies: p:ear require a constant supply of art materials and basic items such as socks and writing materials for the young people who use their facilities.

Skilled people as needed: Such as photographers, graphic designers, carpenters, plumbers, etc who would be willing to help on individual specific projects.

Imago Dei's Global Advocacy Group meets monthly to generate awareness, concern and advocacy for social justice issues around the globe. The group's focus is on human trafficking, particularly women and children trapped in sexual slavery. The group will be holding an awareness event on the evening of February 21st at Urban Grind, and are looking for a singer or musician to play between a short film showing and the presenter speaking on the issue.

The Portland Round is a non-profit, volunteer powered "arts experience". 3 songwriters share the stage with slam poets & live painters. It's about community, inspiration and change for the artist and the audience. The Portland Round begins Saturday February 2, continuing quarterly with different musicians, painters and poets each event. The event also includes a community meal for all those who are volunteering and performing. The organisers are looking for willing volunteers who could help with set up, tear down, tickets, greeting and food preparation. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved with the local arts scene here in Portland and help foster community and integration among artists and musicians in our city.

Mural Project

The Imago Dei Mural Project (http://www.bantha.org/~jhliu/mural/ )is in need of volunteers to finish the final phase! All skill levels are welcomed and appreciated. We will meet at various days and times throughout the months of November through January at Shop People (www.theshoppeople.com ) on the corner of Grand and SE Oak Avenue where the mural is being stored and worked on.
